Former Regional Secretary Manuel António Correia has reportedly signalled to frontline supporters that he will formalize his candidacy for president of PSD-Madeira by tomorrow as  Internal elections begin to generate sources of tension among social democrats. Albuquerque is still pushing for re-election and remains the favourite according to the Diario, as well as JM.

The JM front page also highlights the PSD’s former coalition partner, the CDS. Militants want the President of the Regional Assembly, José Manuel Rodrigues back. He is apparently considering returning to party leadership after their former leader’s resignation.

The president of Funchal City Council announced yesterday that six million euros will be invested in repaving the city’s roads.

“This year we are going to start something that has not been done in Funchal for so many years, and which is a demand from the population. We are going to invest six million euros in repaving the city’s main arteries in all parishes”, said Cristina Pedra, during the ceremony in honour of João Dantas, president of Funchal City Council, between 1985 and 1993, which as of today has a roundabout named after him.

This is the Vitória roundabout, next to Cimentos Madeira, which is now called Rotunda João Dantas. This roundabout underwent a renovation that cost €100,000, with work carried out to “repave the surfaces, install the irrigation system, arrange the gardens and put up a bright sign with the word Funchal”. Quite a large roundabout – but a plentiful supply of cement nearby!

President Cristina Pedra explained that the tribute to João Dantas aims to mark his long political career.

As the head of the municipality of Funchal, Pedra highlighted that the former mayor increased the population’s access to drinking water from 53% to 96%, created five car parks with a capacity of 1,298 spaces, acquired land for the construction of squares and gardens, expanding the city’s green areas from 130 thousand to almost 200 thousand square meters, and was responsible for the construction of Mercado da Penteada, among other projects.

“This symbolic tribute is very worthy”, highlighted the Funchal mayor.

New Michelin Star restaurant on the island

The photographic highlight on the JM cover goes to a chef, highlighting that there is now another Michelin Star restaurant on the island. As already reported here, the Desarma, led by Madeiran Octávio Freitas, has just joined the Michelin constellation in Portugal. The Il Galo D’Oro restaurant maintains two Stars and William maintains a distinction with a new chef.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
