Albuquerque re-elected party leader

Large majority confirm PSD-M leadership

Albuquerque voting

Regional President Miguel Albuquerque was re-elected yesterday as president of PSD-Madeira with the vote of 2,370 of the 2,410 members who went to the polls. 2,625 Social Democrats were registered to vote at these elections.

“It is with great satisfaction that we once again witness a great mobilization of our militants in this electoral act. Mobilization that reinforces our union for the great challenges that lie ahead and demonstrates the willingness of our militants to work on behalf of this party and on behalf of Madeira”, said José Prada, also re-elected secretary-general of PSD-Madeira.

Albuquerque will serve only one more term

The president of the Government of Madeira and leader of the regional PSD, Miguel Albuquerque, said that he will run for just one more term in the executive, in the 2023 election, stressing that he only changes the decision in “exceptional circumstances”.

“My idea is to have the last term of government in 2023, in fact, it was a commitment I made”, he said, reinforcing: “Only exceptional circumstances will change that commitment”.

He has presided over the Madeiran executive since 2015, and was speaking to journalists at the PSD headquarters in the parish of São Martinho, in Funchal, where he was voting in the party’s internal elections.

Leader of the PSD/Madeira since 2014, Albuquerque is the only candidate for the presidency of the party’s Political Commission in the region for the period 2022-2024, as happened in the last three internal elections – 2016, 2018 and 2020.

“I hope that the party mobilizes”, he said, adding: “I know that it is an election in which I am the only candidate, it could possibly be the last one. Miguel Albuquerque stressed that he is the “natural candidate” for president of the Regional Government in 2023 and reinforced that, in that context, this may also be the last time he is re-candidate for the leadership of the PSD/Madeira.

    • That is due to voter apathy. People can’t be bothered to hold the elected to account.

The whole system is geared to keeping the power for the few, and always will. Regardless of the paper name of the office incumbent.

      • exactly André. This apathy is also why corruption is an ongoing fact in Madeira. Money rules. The money of the handful of wealthy families. But there is still hope: he may be re-elected party leader, but maybe, just maybe his party won rule again. We can only pray.

        • You can pray or alternatively you can vote in whoever you think will do a better job. Spoiler alert: other may think different from you. It is called democracy.

            • Well Peter, you can always apply to be a Portuguese national if you legally reside in Portugal for more than 6 years and speak some Portuguese. If that is not the case, I would you play a role in deciding Madeira’s government? Having money or paying taxes does mean you can decide elsewhere’s government. Madeira is not the Netherlands.
