Madeira: wealthiest region of Portugal

“The regions of Lisbon and Madeira both succeeded in securing wealth in 2009 which was above the average of the European Union in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per inhabitant, the Office for National Statistics (INE) said this week.

According to latest available data, the North only managed to reach 65% of the EU average, while Central Portugal was at 67%.

The Alentejo climbed to 74%, while the Azores and the Algarve showed figures of 77% and 87% respectively. The only regions to achieve values above the EU average in 2009 were Lisbon, with a figure of 105%, while Madeira was the wealthiest region of Portugal with a figure of 110%.

Overall, Portugal was found to have wealth per inhabitant that totalled 80% of the European average.”
