The poor condition of the collection point at the intersection of Estrada D. Manuel I and Rua da Boa Vista, in the parish of Machico, has drawn criticism from a JM reader.
According to the person reporting the issue, the accumulation of trash has already been brought to the attention of ARM, the Machico Parish Council, and the Machico City Council, but—according to him—”the problem persists.”
The account given to JM indicates that “this collection point has been like this for over a week” and that “the situation is getting worse over time; trash ends up spilling onto the road and onto my property, creating a foul odor and attracting rats and cockroaches, which puts public health at risk.” “I often find myself forced to pick up trash that isn’t mine,” he adds.
It also notes that additional collection points in Machico are “in poor condition.”
The camara asks people to behave in a way that keeps the island clean and respectable, yet doesn’t hold up to their side of the contract. As I often say, it’s a lot easier to drop litter or dump waste, when there is already litter and waste indiscriminately left around, come on Mr authority, keep your side of the contract, if you want others to do the same.
