Torches were lit in Machico

The hillsides of Machico lit up this Saturday night with the traditional *Fachos* (torches), a historical reenactment that keeps one of the municipality’s most iconic traditions alive. Lighting the ten torches involved around 300 people, stationed at the various sites where the designs—which mark the landscape throughout the night—are prepared.A new feature of this year’s event was the decision by the local government to turn off public lighting in the area where the torches are located; this was intended to create greater contrast between the dark hillside and the flames, allowing for a better view of the designs that took weeks to create.Machico Mayor Hugo Marques explained to 88.8 JMFM that the goal was to offer a unique experience, both for those who regularly follow the tradition and for those discovering it for the first time.
