The municipal civil protection service estimates that approximately 11 hectares of eucalyptus forest and scrubland were consumed by the wildfire that broke out on Saturday night in the Furneira area of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos—a blaze that at one point threatened several homes. The Judiciary Police are investigating the cause of the incident, amid suspicions of arson.
The Regional Civil Protection Service confirmed the presence of investigators at the scene. It will now be up to the police force to establish the specific circumstances under which the fire started and determine whether there is evidence to support the theory of a criminal origin.
