Authorities are investigating a drone operation carried out near Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo, following the release of footage on social media captured in the vicinity of the airport facilities.
Diário has learned that the incident has been formally reported to the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Public Security Police (PSP) via Madeira Airport’s security services. The National Aeronautical Authority and ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal have also been notified of the situation.
At issue is a video posted on social media featuring several aerial shots of Madeira Airport, specifically of runway 05/23 and the surrounding area. Aircraft are visible on the runway and taxiways at times, while the footage appears to have been captured by a drone at a considerable altitude and in close proximity to the airport infrastructure.
The post raised questions regarding the conditions under which the flight took place and, above all, whether the necessary authorizations existed for an operation of this nature in an area particularly sensitive in terms of aviation safety.
In a public comment, when asked by another user about the feasibility of operating a drone so close to the runway, the person who posted the footage claimed there were no restrictions in Madeira and pointed to the information provided by the app used to operate the device.
However, such information is not sufficient on its own to determine the legality of the flight. Limitations or information displayed by drone manufacturer apps do not supersede official rules regarding airspace usage or the geographical zones applicable to unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations.
It is now up to the competent authorities to verify the specific circumstances of the operation—particularly the flight location and altitude, the proximity to the runway and aircraft, and, crucially, whether there was specific authorization allowing for the capture of images under those conditions.
As of now, there is no evidence to conclude that the operator flew without authorization or committed any violation. It is precisely this aspect that will be investigated following the report filed.
The incident is particularly significant due to the proximity to airport infrastructure and the potential risks that the improper use of drones can pose to flight operations.
ANAC, the PSP/Airport Security, the National Aviation Authority, and ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal have been made aware of the situation; it is now up to the competent authorities to conduct the necessary investigations.
