Smaller carnival parades a success

After the main allegorical parade in Funchalwas the usual “main event” of the Regional Carnival celebrations, yesterday saw a whole series of smaller, but equally important carnival celebrations in most of the municipalities and some of the towns and villages around the island.

The local press reports from smaller carnival parades held in Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz (pictured), Santa Cruz, Campanario, Loreto in Arco da Calheta, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, and Machico, among others.

From 8:30 pm, the population will be able to see some troupes that, last Saturday, paraded in Funchal, as well as other projects from various institutions in the Region.

In total, 10 groups and 1,500 participants participate.

JM reports that yesterday was “an inviting day for swimming on the Porto Santo sand, an almost perfect summer setting if it weren’t for the beach conditions causing some outrage among bathers”.

The reason for the complaints is the algae, infested by mosquitoes, which are affecting the normal enjoyment of space in a large part of the golden sand, as shown in images sent by readers to the newspaper.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
