Both local newspapers report extensively on the Michelin awards handed out to restaurants on the island. Rather than “cut and paste” acres of platitudes the summary is as follows:

‘Il Gallo d’Oro’ at The Cliff Bay renews its two Michelin stars, and maintains its ‘Green Star’, awarded for the first time in 2022 – one of only three in Portugal awarded this Green star (shamrock), which rewards sustainability in gastronomy.

The Desarma restaurant, at Hotel The Views Baía awarded its first Michelin star.

This is the first time that Desarma, whose chef is Octávio Freitas, has received this distinction, joining three other Portuguese restaurants that also debuted with a star.

The William Restaurant’ sees its star renewed

The ‘William Restaurant’, at Reid’s Palace, a Belmond Hotel, in Funchal, saw its existing Michelin star renewed, now under the leadership of Chef José Diogo Costa.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. Just a minor nit picking comment because I am bored, the Horta photo is inaccurate. This clearly is an old photo but is of Il Basilico, the Italian, and I use that term loosely, restaurant owned by The PortoBay group.

  2. Lets hope that their salads are creative enough since around where I live in mainland many restaurants don’t make a effort with the salad at all .And there is plenty good restaurants in Madeira where you can eat a good meal without paying a big price
