The Carnival of Solidarity usually includes various events such as charity marches, concerts, auctions and other activities aimed at attracting attention and support from the community. Funds raised are then used to help those in need, charities or projects in the areas of health, education and social welfare.

Carnival allegorical parade

The Carnival Allegorical Parade in Madeira, taking place on Saturday, is one of the most impressive and spectacular events of the local carnival. This parade is a colourful procession filled with costumes, allegorical figures, man-made structures and the participation of local community groups and organizations.

The main feature of the allegorical parade are thematic floats – large decorated floats on which various scenes are presented, reflecting various aspects of culture, history, traditions or modern events. Parade participants often wear costumes to match their chosen theme.

Trapalhao Parade

Carnival 3

On Carnival Tuesday (held on Shrove Tuesday ), Funchal hosts another parade known as the “Cortejo Trapalhão”, which can be classified as a satirical parade based on cultural heritage. This parade represents one that was originally held spontaneously along Rua da Carreira in the first half of the 20th century. The creativity of the participants knows no boundaries and ranges from social and political satire to traditional frames, as well as simple disguises.

Participation is open to everyone, citizens and foreigners, as well as individuals or in groups, within the various categories of four classification classes – adult class, children’s class, best Trapagliana class, King Trapagliana and transvestite class. The winners of each category win a cash prize.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
