Former Mayor returns to Madeira

Calado arriving at the airport

Pedro Calado’s return to Madeira, after 22 days of detention in Lisbon, makes today’s headline see in this morning’s JM, with the title ‘Calado leaves all positions’. Speaking to journalists waiting for him at the airport as expected, the former president said that he will not hold any political, public or party position again.

the Representative of the Republic for Madeira, Ireneu Barreto‘s long-awaited statement on the region’s political future is another highlight of this edition. Ireneu Barreto leaves the ‘Government in Marcelo’s hands’ – again as reported here. The decision is seen as a way to buy time until Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolves the Assembly and calls early elections.

The Diario’s headlines almost exactly match those in JM, except that their report on Calado reads “Pedro Calado returns to the Region with the certainty that he will not return, in the near future, to public and party positions”

In occurrences, another case of negligence. Despite the strong waves, two young bathers went for a swim and had to be saved.
