Poor weather forecast to continue

2024 sees a poor start

Weather forecast graphic

While investigating more detailed weather forecasting for this blog I came across a rather depressing picture of the next two weeks from a couple of sites – certainly, if you have come to Madeira to look for a bit of winter sun you might be a little disappointed. However the forecasts are notoriously unreliable, so you might end with the sun cracking the flags for the next fortnight.

To be fair there will be a lot of visitors pleased to see moderate conditions – a lot of walkers and hikers have arrived in the last few days to replace the traditional visitors here for the seasonal holiday period. From all reports, those coming from the UK will be happy just to dry out! However, they do need clear skies to get the best views.

The first set of predictions shows the rain and mean sea level pressure over the next ten days from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. We flew back to the UK on Friday with our pilot opting for the Oceanic route, heading more westerly than usual to avoid strong headwinds caused by the Jetstream taking a plunge southwards towards Madeira as the area of High Pressure which is now “drying out” the UK formed.

It looks like this Anticyclone is going to form a ” blocking high” which will do “as it says on the tin ” forcing low pressure areas and bad weather southwards to affect the weather in Madeira.

The Jetstream is forecast to remain very active over southerly latitudes for the next couple of weeks so little change looks on the cards and for the UK we might be seeing the newspapers using ” Ice Bomb” and “Beast from the East” headlines as another branch of the Jetstream is forecast to bring winds down from the Arctic at the same time.
