Madeira Beer Company strike!!

Agreement sought for 2024

Possible Madeira Beer Company strike makes headlines

Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira (ECM) has, according to JM, until the end of today to comment on proposals to review the company agreement for 2024. If it fails, it will be faced with a strike.

The notice results from workers’ dissatisfaction with the fact that “the company’s management, to date, has not responded to the review proposal presented by the Federation of Trade Unions (FESAHT) on November 23, 2023”, according to a statement press conference of the National Union of Agricultural and Food, Beverage and Tobacco Workers.

The new request for a response and the threat of a day of strike are contained in a resolution approved unanimously at a workers’ plenary held on Wednesday, January 24th.

“In the absence of a positive response from the company, as a form of protest and struggle”, the workers “decided to go on strike on February 8, 2024”, says a statement from the National Union of Agricultural and Industrial Workers of Food, Beverages and Tobacco.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. Chorus:
Well it’s lonesome away from your kindred and all
By the camp fire at night
    Where the wild dingos call
    But there’s nothin’ so lonesome
    Morbid or drear
Than to stand in the bar of a pub with no beer

Now the publican’s anxious for the quota to come
And there’s a far away look on the face of the bum
The maids got all cranky and
    And the cooks acting queer
What a terrible place, is a pub with no beer

Then the stockman rides up with his dry dusty throat
He presses up to the bar and pulls a wad from his coat
But the smile on his face quickly turns to a snear
    As the barman says sadly
    “The pubs got no beer.”

Then the swaggy comes in smoothered in dust and flies
He throws down his roll and rubs the sweat from his eyes
But when he is told he says “what’s this I hear”
    I’ve trudged fifty flamin’ miles
To a pub with no beer

Now there’s a dog on the veranda for his master he waits
But the boss is inside drinkin’ wine with his mates
He hurries for cover and he cringes with fear
It’s no place for a dog
Round a pub with no beer

And old Billie the Blacksmith, the first time in his life
Why he’s gone home cold sober to his darling wife

    The pub’s got no beer

Well its hard to believe that there’s customers still
But the money’s still tinkling in the old ancient til
The wine dots are happy and I know they’re sincere
When they say they don’t care if the pubs got no beer

So it’s a lonesome away from your kindred and all

  2. Interesting. And the timing is interesting too. The company (producer of Coral beers and Brisa) is a tentacle of the Grupo Sousa octopus. I don´t recall that any company owned by the Grupo Sousa has even been challenged, so in a time where the corruption is addressed – and we have all been wondering when the name of the Sousas will appear in this process – this is an interesting development. Let´s see where it goes.
