Government at risk of collapse

… unless a new leader is found

Government at risk of collapse is the headline this morning

The local press is running the same story as the one that appeared here yesterday predicting that the Regional government could collapse without the continued support of their coalition partner PAN Madeira.

PAN (People/Animals/Nature) warns that it will break the parliamentary advocacy agreement if Miguel Albuquerque does not resign. The party ensures that it will only continue to achieve a majority if the PSD nominates another president. Two other parties, PS and Chega, promise to present censure motions next week.

JM reports that the Funchal executive in solidarity with Pedro Calado, who is now in Lisbon facing questioning today; Albuquerque admits requesting for the double immunity as he is president of the Regional Government of Madeira to be lifted.

Judicial interrogations may be delayed

The Diario observes that today’s regional (and national) news will, of course, be marked by the first judicial interrogations of Pedro Calado, Avelino Farinha and Custódio Correia at the Central Criminal Investigation Court, in Lisbon.

The three detainees must be heard in the first judicial interrogation to apply coercive measures.

However, a judicial source warned that a strike by government (judicial) employees is planned for today, without minimum services, which could compromise the carrying out of the investigations.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. “Albuquerque admits requesting for the double immunity as he is president of the Regional Government of Madeira to be lifted.”
Admin, do I read that as, “Albuquerque has asked that any immunity from criminal charges due to his position as president of the Regional Government be ignored?”
