President accused of supporting low wages

Yellow warning for rain on Sunday

The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque

The local branch of the Communist Party, PCP – Madeira, is focussing on the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque as part of its continuing ampaign “Enough Talking! Increase salaries and pensions”. Reported in JM it carried out a series of meetings with workers in the hotel sector throughout yesterday.

The party states that it was possible to verify the “contradiction that exists between the increase in profits of entrepreneurs in the sector with the degradation of working conditions, the increase in job insecurity and low wages for workers in the hotel sector and similar”.

“Next to one of the hotels where PCP leaders and activists contacted workers, Ricardo Lume denounced that (President) Miguel Albuquerque’s Government is an accomplice to those who profit from precarious employment and low wages.

A clear example of this reality is what is happening in the hotel sector and similar sectors, where with each passing day the exploitation of workers is increasingly brutal.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
