Portugal record first ever Rugby World Cup win

The Daily Mail reports that Portugal went WILD as they recorded their first ever Rugby World Cup win with a dramatic 24-23 victory over Fiji. Rodrigo Mata’s 78th-minute try, converted by Samuel Marques, secured the win. They booked their place in the quarter-final, sparking wild celebration from fans and players.

Portugal’s win knocks out Eddie Jones’ Australia side after their worst ever World Cup performance, failing to make it past the pool stage in tournament history. There were wild scenes as the underdogs pulled off the massive upset – and if they’d won by just a few points more, the Wallabies would still be alive in the tournament

The historic win meant that Australia’s Rugby World Cup campaign came to a crushing end, making it the Wallabies worst ever performance at the tournament. Fiji, despite their nail-biting loss to Portugal, managed to secure their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals against England.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. Serious discussions are taking place for Georgia to replace Italy in the 6 Nations. Move over Italy & Georgia…. Portugal has just taken the Crown. Let’s not forget that Fiji beat England…
