Tourist tax raises €1m

Santa Cruz more than doubles Ecotax revenues

Tourist tax featured in JM

JM this morning recalls that it was precisely one year ago that the Santa Cruz municipality decided to increase the value of the tourist tax from 1 to 2 euros. An increase that caused revenue raised in the first seven months of this year to soar to just over one million euros, a value that already doubles the tourist tax recorded in total for 2022.

The photographic highlight goes to the airport as SATA reinforces their Madeira-Azores connection. The Azorean company will offer six weekly frequencies next winter. Tourism Secretary Eduardo Jesus praises the global offer of 132 air connections, which is the outcome of a “permanent dialogue” between his department and the airline.

Also featured in this edition is the new “house of culture” inaugurated on the 15th. The Cultural and Research Centre, supervised by the Câmara Municipal do Funchal.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
