Landslide at Lugar de Baixo

Fortunately, nobody was hurt

JM reports that a landslide of rocks and earth from the cliff between Tabua and Lugar de Baixo, in Ponta de Sol, just after 12 noon yesterday, scared some of the customers who were on the beach esplanade, right next door. Fortunately, there were no bathers or passers-by in that location, and local firefighters did not receive any alerts or distress calls.

But all the rubble of stones and earth ended up falling on the beach and reaching the sea, as can easily be seen in the images. JM contacted the Fire Department of Ribeira Brava and Ponta de Sol, who confirmed that there was no alert for the type of collapse in that location. Also, a source from the Municipal Civil Protection Service revealed that there were no requests or warnings of any collapse, but would monitor the situation based on the video that is circulating on social media.

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.

  1. The island is crumbling back into the sea bit by bit. Got a home on the island? Enjoy it while you can, it will have fallen into the sea in a 100,000 years time! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
