Antenna on fibre optic cable will detect submarines

Last minute change in spec.

The Government of the Republic has decided, at the last minute, to introduce a submarine detection antenna valued at €250 million in the new fibre optic ring between the mainland, Madeira and the Azores, with connections to Terceira and Ponta Delgada.
In addition to greater communications capacity and total system redundancy, the new fibre optic ring will also include equipment for seismic and climate detection, allowing the creation of a new data research centre in the Azores.

IP Telecom is preparing the launch process for the public tender for the installation of the ring of fibre optic cables that will become operational after the current cables have exceeded their useful life.

New more powerful blog search facility

Antenna on fibre optic cable will detect submarines 1

A new, vastly improved “search” facility has been introduced allowing readers to search (box in the sidebar above) on any word or phrase used in any of the posts over the last sixteen years. Previously the search facility only returned matches on headings rather than the entire content. It remains to be seen whether this will slow the blog down – fingers crossed! If it works it should move the blog even further ahead of the increasing number of imitators, providing a huge resource for visitors and residents.
