Container ship with all-female command

… docks in Caniçal in an all-time first

Container ship Revecca S

The container ship ‘Rebecca S’, from the shipowner GS Lines (Sousa Group), docked yesterday in the port of Caniçal, under the command of the commander Ana Melim and her immediate, Telma Cunha, an “unprecedented event in the Portuguese navy”.

“This moment reveals the importance that gender equality assumes in the culture of the Sousa Group, continuing its great commitment to training young talent and promoting careers linked to the sea”, says a note sent to the media.

Recently, Captain Ana Melim, 32 years old, trained at Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique (ENIDH) and who has been part of the Sousa Group since 2013, became the first Madeiran to command a merchant navy vessel.

The container ship, with the capacity to transport 679 containers and a length of 130 metres, ensures maritime connections between mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira and has a total of 11 crew members.
