Selvagens expedition

40 scientists set off today

Selvagens expedition 1

The Diario reports that around 40 researchers, managers and technicians from many regional, national and international institutions depart today for the Selvagens Islands on an expedition, which is organized by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the managing entity of the islands and surrounding waters.

This initiative is part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Ilhas Selvagens Natural Reserve, also arising as a result of the recent expansion of the reserve area and the total protection regime in its marine area.

Expedição Selvagens 50, which was presented on the 20th of April by the regional secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Susana Prada, will take place in the southernmost territory of Portugal between today and the 1st of May.

Selvagens Islands (also known as the Salvage Islands are a small Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, 280 kilometres south of Madeira, and 165 kilometres north of the Canary Islands. The archipelago includes two major islands, Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena, each surrounded by a cluster of islets and reefs, with a total area of 2.73 km2 Spain regularly claims sovereignty over the Selvagens.

    • Peter, the following is a quote from Wikipedia:–

“The Savage Islands or Selvagens Islands (Portuguese: Ilhas Selvagens IPA: [ˈiʎɐʃ sɛlˈvaʒɐ̃jʃ]; also known as the Salvage Islands[2][3]) are a small Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, 280 kilometres (175 mi) south of Madeira”

So, Salvage islands is an alternative name. I’ve never heard them called that myself.
