JM reports that Anona, or “custard apple” production in Madeira increased compared to 2022, but it is still not enough to beat the 2021 numbers.

“This year we have an increase in production compared to 2022, but we have not yet reached 2021, because, effectively, we have had some climate changes that have caused problems”, noted the official. The Festa da Anona will move to January in 2024, precisely for this reason, which makes the production of the fruit happen earlier.

In this regard, the official guarantees that, through funds from the Regional Government, technical help is being made available to farmers with a view to combating the problem.

Humberto Vasconcelos, the minister responsible for the agriculture portfolio, speaking at the Anona Festival being held in Faial, in Santana, praised the fact that this is an “important event in the dissemination” of the work carried out throughout the year. “Here we not only display the Anona of the producers, but we also take stock of the work done by the Secretariat through its technicians in all the problems that appear throughout the year in the production of the custard apple”, he added.

He took the opportunity to highlight the development that has been made in Madeira, especially in Faial. “it is also due to the regional leaders who led the progress throughout the Region”, he reinforced, listing some of the works that he considers to have been fundamental to “protect and improve the living conditions” of the populations of the North coast.

President attends Anona Festival today

The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, will be present at the festival today.

The estimated production of the Anona for the current campaign is 936 tons. The number of producers dedicated to the cultivation of the custard apple in the Region amounts to 1,160, and the production area totals 117 hectares spread throughout the Region but mostly located in the municipalities of Santana, Machico, Santa Cruz and Funchal.
