As already anticipated here on Sunday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) have placed the Madeira archipelago under a yellow warning due to wind and sea conditions between 6:00 am on the 15th and 6:00 am on the 16th, on the north coast of Madeira and on the island of Porto Santo.

In the meantime, there is still a yellow warning for the south coast, between 12:00 and 24:00 on the 15th of February, and for the mountainous regions, the warning is between 12:00 on the 15th and 3:00 am on the 16th. Here, the wind will be strong from the north/northeast, with gusts of up to 100 km/h.

As for the wind and sea on the south coast, the wind will be strong from the north/northeast, with gusts of up to 80 km/h. The waves are from the north with 4 to 5 metres, this is on the south coast and also for the island of Porto Santo.

The National Maritime Authority and the Navy also warned yesterday of a “considerable worsening of weather conditions and maritime agitation in Madeira from Tuesday afternoon, a situation that is expected to last until Friday.

9-metre waves, 120km/hr wind gusts

The information disclosed states that the swell in the north-northeast quadrant will be characterized by waves between five and nine metres, with an average period varying between 10 and 13 seconds.

It also indicates that the wind will have an intensity of around 65 kilometres/hour and with gusts of up to 120 kilometres.

Faced with this adverse situation, the National Maritime Authority and the Navy are alerting the entire maritime community and the population in general to the precautions to be taken “both when preparing to go to sea, and when they are at sea or in coastal areas”.

Among the recommendations, he highlights the importance of “reinforcing mooring and keeping a close eye on moored and anchored vessels”.

It also advises against walking along the sea or in exposed areas, such as the harbor protection breakwaters, cliffs or beaches, as well as the practice of recreational fishing along the cliffs and cliff areas that are affected by the breaking waves.
