JM confirms that the Municipality of Santa Cruz wants to manage the supply of water to Madeira International Airport and indicated that the municipality will proceed with a lawsuit to withdraw the competence of the public company in the sector.

“Before, we will send communications to the ARM [Water and Waste of Madeira] and the Regional Government in order to reverse the legislation, for the municipality to proceed with the delivery and settlement of water”, lawyer Miguel Santos Pereira told the Lusa press agency.

“If there is no response within the legal deadline, or if there is a negative response, we will move forward with the action and, in this case, it will be before the summer”, said Miguel Santos Pereira.

The downstream water supply to the Madeira International Airport property complex is the responsibility of the public company ARM – Águas e Residuos da Madeira, following a decision by the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), taken at a time when the municipality did not have the capacity to provide the service to large infrastructures.

“With the investment that, however, the municipality of Santa Cruz has made, it currently has the capacity to supply low water to all the infrastructures that are located in the municipality”, explained Miguel Santos Pereira, considering that “it does not make sense”for the current norm to remain in force.

The Municipality of Santa Cruz indicated to the Lusa agency that it had invested €170,000 in improving the network for the water reservoir that supplies Madeira Airport, now having the capacity to manage the service and charge it.

In addition, the municipality did not adhere to ARM’s downstream distribution service. The public company is responsible for capturing, managing and distributing water in the 11 municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, but in the downstream, in supplying the consumer, it operates only in five municipalities – Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Ribeira Brava, Santana and Porto Santo –, while in the rest the competence lies with the local authorities.

“That’s where we’re going to develop our efforts”, clarified Miguel Santos Pereira. The court action by the Municipality of Santa Cruz comes after, in January, the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Funchal condemned the Government of Madeira to register the International Airport in the municipality’s real estate matrix, a situation that could force the Vinci concessionaire to pay the Municipal Property Tax (IMI), from which it is currently exempt.

The decision stemmed from a lawsuit filed in 2014 by the municipality against the regional executive.

The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, will visit tomorrow, at 12 noon, the beachfront, in Paul do Mar, in order to observe the works carried out there. The refurbishment of Varadouro do Paul do Mar has been completed, following the conclusion of work on the Casa do Guincho.

The complete renovation of the boathouse was an investment of 222,261.23 euros, 75% of which was funded by the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

The intervention, carried out over three phases, is considered fundamental for the local fishing community, allowing fishermen to shore their boats more efficiently.

  1. Don’t know about anyone else, but could not fathom out this one. Law suit filed 2014!! Seems to me to be some long running dispute, why a commercial enterprise is riding on the back of others financial and material input again is beyond me.
