Cable car deadline extended

Controversial Nuns Valley tender delayed

Nuns Valley - where a new cable car is proposed

JM reports that the Government Council meeting yesterday afternoon determined the extension of the deadline for submitting applications, by 30 days, for “the tender limited by prior qualification” for the so-called ‘cable car’ at Curral das Freiras.

Strictly speaking, according to the text of the resolutions sent to the Media, the regional executive determines “the extension of the deadline for the presentation of applications by 30 days, counting from the sending of the respective notice to the Publications Office of the European Union, of the procedure limited tender by prior qualification, with publication of a notice in the Official Journal of the European Union, for the concession of private use of the public domain and the use of the private domain for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a cable car system, an adventure and nature interpretation park and a “zip line” (slide), including the respective support and catering facilities, at Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos”.

The cable car project at Nuns Valley has attracted a lot of criticism since it was announced from parties and activists across the political spectrum, as well as members of the public and regular visitors who feel that an “adventure park” is wholly inappropriate for an area of such outstanding natural beauty.
