Christmas lights in Santa Cruz

Both local newspapers report on the Christmas lights being turned on in Santa Cruz last night – the first municipality to do so. The council there held a special event to mark the occasion, with a school choir and a jazz band, which by all accounts was well attended.

The local mayor, Filipe Sousa, went so far as to claim that Santa Cruz was now the “Christmas capital of Madeira” – a rather ambitious claim in the face of the 1.6 million bulbs illuminating Funchal from 1 December – there are details of the exact times of the Chrismas lights in Funchal on this link.

The respected Madeira expert Peter Groen has updated his website with an excellent feature on the ancient forests at Fanal, in the north of Madeira, which includes many species of laurel, some being 600 years old.

Peter has included a few videos of a recent visit, which are well worth a look – on the link opposite.
