Rally tragedy

… dominates both newspapers

Rally tragedy headline in JM

Not surprisingly both newspapers are dominated by the awful rally yesterday with the violent death of an 8-year-old girl (initially reported as a 12-year-old) during the Encumeada stage of the Madeira Wine Rally.

JM headline “Rally Tragedy”. “With an extensive report in this edition, the Madeira Wine Rally ended with a tragedy”.

“Alexandre Camacho won one of the most competitive editions ever, which, however, was overshadowed by the death of an eight-year-old girl, a victim being violently run over, in the middle of the competition in the Encumeada area, not resisting the serious injuries, dying in the hospital”.

The Diario observes that “a day that should have been a celebration and consecration ended
in the worst way”.

“Tragedy overshadows Rally” is their headline, “a title no one wanted”, together with a photo of the scene of the accident – “the title no one would like to have given”.

“Death of an 8-year-old girl, after being picked up by one of the vehicles in competition, at Encumeada, overshadows the 63rd edition of the competition won by Alexandre
Camacho/Pedro Calado”.

  1. This must be, due to report of no other injuries ( which could indicate car ran into crowd) just a childs death, lack of safety protocol, not surprising when you consider the general approach to H and S.
Thats for an enquiry to determine.
I’m sure I speak for all on blog, when I give our deepest condolences to this poor childs family and friends, absolutely tragic, a fun time, turns into every parents nightmare.
