Record-breaking April

Madeira hotels receive 170,000 guests.

Madeira saw records broken in April

In the analysis of tourism indicators, the main sector of regional economic activity, last month broke records, according to the Department of Regional Statistics (DREM). They report that with the first data for tourist accommodation in the region, it is estimated that 169,800 guests in hotels (establishments with more than 10 beds), corresponding to 830,700 overnight stays, which translates into very expressive year-on-year variations, of +535.4% and +574.2%, respectively”, and the highest ever value for the month, breaking all previous records.

The sharp increases result from the impact of the pandemic on tourist activity in 2021, more specifically in the first four months, with the month of April of that year registering only 26,700 incoming guests and around 123,300 overnight stays.

The values of overnight stays and incoming guests, indicated for April 2022, are the “highest ever for this month”, says the statement sent by DREM. In comparison with the data released by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with less than 10 beds, and, according to this interpretation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation, in April this year, showed a year-on-year increase of 663.1 %, a “more expressive” variation than that observed at the national level, which registered +548.4%.

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 241.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 157’300 (18.9% of the total), while overnight stays from residents abroad rose by 772.9 % situated at 673,400.

Compared to April 2019, the change in overnight stays produced by residents in Portugal was positive, +100.3%, and +13-7%, in the case of overnight stays produced by residents abroad. In April this year, guests residing in the country totalled 46,000, reaching 123,800 in the case of residents abroad.

  1. That will be why there have been problems at popular walks. It is a fine balance that must be struck, and with more accommodation planned it could easily get worse.
