The President of the Republic conceded today that there was a “problem of communication or understanding” with the Regional Government of Madeira regarding the invitation to the celebrations of the 10th of June in London for Portugal Day – see previous post – which devalued it.

In response to questions from journalists, in Braga, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that “the understanding of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira [Miguel Albuquerque] is that there had not been a sufficient formal contact to be able to go”.

“As you can imagine, this, in the context of a war, a pandemic, a June 10, we have to admit, this problem of communication or understanding, as you imagine, is of little importance”, he considered.

Asked if this episode does not affect his relations with the Regional Government of Madeira, which released a new statement reaffirming that there was no invitation to the Day of Portugal celebrations in London, the head of state replied: “No”.
