Portugal enters a new Covid wave

… reaching almost 25,000 daily cases

Diagnostic tests are no longer free and the positivity rate is already at 42%,

Diário de Notícias reports on the mainland that from one week to the next, with Covid cases increasing by almost 50%, Portugal could be the first in Europe to register a new wave of the pandemic, which “is already well defined”, says Carlos Antunes from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Health and political authorities should already be explaining to the population what is happening and taking action. Hospitalizations and deaths are already on the rise among the elderly.

The newspaper observes that once again, the SARS CoV-2 virus shows that everything can change from one week to another, just a new strain of one of the existing variants or a new variant. Portugal is an example of this. The number of cases increased by almost 50% in just one week, the one in which the country once again passed the barrier of 20,000 and 24,000 cases, when last week, projections based on data from real cases, evaluated by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, pointed out that only 15 -16,000 cases have been reached as a daily average.

Exponential Covid growth returns

Professor Carlos Antunes, who has been part of the team that has been modelling the evolution of the pandemic since its beginning, confirms: “Almost without realizing it, an exponential increase in cases is happening again. more cases in all regions and age groups, more deaths and an increase in hospitalizations is already beginning in some regions”.

Therefore, from a mathematical point of view, it can be said that we are facing “a new Covid wave, which, mathematically, is perfectly defined, and which from the epidemiological point of view is associated with several factors, one of which is the appearance of a new lineage of the Ómicron, the BA.5, which is prevailing in relation to the BA.2, another to greater mobility and social contact with less protection”.

Mask use to blame?

The data analyst even says that “such growth has not yet been detected in other European countries”, and that “Portugal may be the first, although it is already happening in South Africa and the USA”. The professor admits that he never thought that so many people could give up the use of a mask so quickly, that the measure should have ceased to be mandatory to be recommended, but with a strong message that it should continue to be used in closed spaces with many people. and that the growth of cases is dependent on self-assessment of risk.

It must be pointed out that the article above refers to the new Covid wave appearing in mainland Portugal, which is not at the moment reflected in Madaira.

  1. Not convinced that the wearing or not wearing masks is the key factor. Mask wearing in the UK was scrapped many weeks ago and infection figures are continuing to fall.

    • Wearing masks is a key factor if there is strong social interaction. Social interaction is not the same in UK in Portugal. You can be in London bus and no one sits near you or talk to you. In Portugal you may be the only person on the bus and the elederly lady that gets in the next stop will sit by yourside and give you a 20 min chat.

  2. Even the world’s foremost “medical expert” admits that the covid is like the flu and has a very low fatality rate.

“During an interview to promote his new book, Bill Gates said that COVID is just like the flu, hurts the elderly more, and that the vaccines are imperfect.

Gates explained, “We didn’t understand that it’s a fairly low fatality rate & that it’s a disease mainly in the elderly, kind of like flu is, although a bit different than that.”

Regarding the vaccines, Gates said, “once Omicron comes along, the vaccine is not reducing transmission, hardly at all, particularly about three or four months after you take the vaccine.”

Gates words are going viral online because the nation’s top lockdown opponents, were saying these same things since the pandemic began.

Many Americans and social media users were even kicked off the platforms for saying these exact things.”
