Funchal busy for fireworks

Perfect conditions attract crowds for fireworks

Cruise ships gather to witness the fireworks display

The two main newspapers take different angles on the build-up to the 8-minute firework display last night as the arrival of 2022 was anticipated in Funchal. The Diario focussed on the numbers attracted to the natural amphitheatre in order to reserve the better positions to view the fireworks, which did not disappoint.

Somehow the fireworks seemed louder than usual – possibly due to the wind direction or possibly down to the high cloud cover? Or maybe the technology has moved on a little? The bay was busy with smaller private vessels as well as the larger cruise ships, which are featured in a set of photos in JM on the link above

The noise generated by the ships at sea certainly contributed to the event. Hopefully, there will be no significant contribution to the alarming Covid numbers seen over the last two days -although the restricted testing over the two days will probably result in a fall in these.

A video of the firework display will be posted here when a decent one is published on YouTube.
