“Corruption is the biggest problem”

With the elections less than a week away, the JM website has a feature on the PAN candidate for the legislative elections who states that corruption “is one of the major problems not only in the Region, but also in the country”, which, in his view, leads to a lack of funds to respond to needs in areas such as combating poverty, health or education.

People–Animals–Nature (Pessoas-Animais-Natureza) is a green poltical party in Portugal, founded in 2009. In 2015, they won one seat in the Assembly of the Republic. In 2019, they also won one seat in the European Parliament and increased their seat share to 4 in the Assembly (with 2 seats won in Lisbon, 1 in Porto, and 1 in Setúbal).

In the 2011 Madeiran regional election, it had 2.13% of the votes, with a total of 3,135 votes, thus having elected one MP also in the regional parliament, Rui Manuel dos Santos Almeida.

In a political initiative, the new Regional spokesman, Professor Joaquim José Sousa, said that in the country, the structural situation in terms of fighting corruption is “worrying”, although in Madeira it gives an “idea of ​​being frightening”.

“Our country loses €34,000 every minute to corruption, and loses around €1,000 million to fraud and tax evasion, representing 9% of the country’s spending on education or the annual salary of almost fifty thousand nurses”, points out the head of the list, adding that the fight against corruption “is vital” for development.

In Calheta, PAN contacted the population highlighting the importance of the knowledge economy for the future, regretting that the rulers “ignore it and that in the Regional parliament the main opposition party does not have the strength or skill to mobilize society and influence a new paradigm”.

Madeira favours construction

In this sense, the party guarantees that it will continue with “a development based on concrete and construction that will not allow for a fairer future for all”. Joaquim José Sousa understands that “it is not conceivable that so many millions of euros later, we are still a Region where in the winter you are cold inside many houses and in the summer you suffer from the heat in those same houses”.

Asked to talk about the funds from the national post-pandemic Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the candidate said that in Madeira the “PRR goes to large construction companies (whilst) in Italy, for example, the funds from the PRR will pay 110% for energy rehabilitation of Italian dwellings.

In another initiative in the parish of Canhas, the PAN candidate said that “not even Tourism is a regional goal, as we are committed to mass tourism, but we are content to have package tourism, far from the sustainable tourism that we need and that our history deserved us to keep it, unlike the Azores which are today recognized as a destination of sustainable and expanding nature”, he observed.

Joaquim José Sousa also states that Madeira, after 7 years of PSD and PDS/CDS government, “in 2021 was the region of the country where the risk of poverty was greater, where material deprivation was more severe”. He also adds that between 2011 and 2021, Madeira was the region in which “the fewest young people retained or managed to return to the island after completing their higher studies, it was the region that aged the most and these are some examples of the leadership that we do not want and that we do not want”. “We heard neither in the Regional parliament nor in the national parliament, as if there was a holy alliance between PSD and this PS to silence this situation that shames us all”.

Joaquim José Sousa noted that the economic data for 2021 “leave no doubt, the regional economy is based on weevils and subsidies, 32% of regional taxpayers are exempt from paying IRS (an increase of 7% compared to 2020)”.

According to the candidate, the PAN program is based on a set of proposals structured around three axes: reinforcement of means in the fight against corruption; the strengthening of measures to prevent conflicts of interest and the implementation of mechanisms for transparency and safeguarding the public interest in various dimensions.

When asked what his main banners would be, Joaquim José Sousa undertook to install an elected office in Funchal; to go weekly to a parish in the Region to listen to the citizens; in creating an online deputy page to be accountable to citizens; to present to the plenary a proposal for national aid, to combat waiting lists and bring to the plenary a motion to temporarily suspend the Ginjas road project “because the Laurissilva Forest is a unique world, national and regional heritage that does not we can lose out of stubbornness or tantrum”, he concluded.

  1. Here in the UK we elect an inept, corrupt, lying, Bourgeoisie government or council, then at the next election we vote them out & elect another inept, corrupt, lying, Bourgeoisie government or council, One thing is certain…the rich will get richer & the workers pay the taxes…

  2. It is interesting that the Madeiran PAN member should highlight the lack of modern building techniques

    His assumptions are however not correct, I myself have personally witnessed the implementation of the ETICS system on a social housing revamp on the north side of the island and was suitably impressed after discussing it’s application with the site manager

    Due to Madeira’s mild humid climate, insulation has really never been a priority and is well tolerated by it’s population

    In regards to taxes, if you have a tax evasion problem then abolish taxes
    Do not apply taxes to the person or their property, apply them only to profits made from persons by businesses

    No personal taxes plus ever increasing efficiency results in a robust economy

    Much like China, Madeira’s construction industry keeps people employed but is a detriment to the environment and wastes funding on white elephants

    The most important factor is energy and it’s cost, Madeira should already have transitioned to a free power model which is completely feasible due to it’s population density. In a few years it should implement a small modular reactor for power production along with a move away from imported natural gas

    This along with the existing wind farm and hydro resources should be sufficient going forward

    All transport both public and private should transition to full EV further reducing reliance on external energy sources. Madeira’s coastline is around 90 miles, current EV’s have an average range of 200-300 miles

    EV’s are a perfect fit for Madeira’s terrain due to their regen braking and low end torque characteristics

    PAN should focus on improving he lowest hanging fruit first and foremost, the rest will eventually fall into line if they persist

  3. The curruption of the PSD-dominated Madeiran government is nowhere more visible than in the ferry – or the lack of it I should say. The Grupo Sousa finances the PSD-M. It is not rocket science to understand that there won be a ferry as long as the PSD rules, because the Sousas want to keep their (illegal) monopoly.       You are publicly laying out the obvious for all the world to see, this is putting you in a very precarious position
      Many people over the years in Madeira have come to an untimely demise because of their opposing views in regards to the status quo

      Look at it this way, the mainland has an unlawful import duty on vehicles which it now claims as a carbon tax in order to bypass EU rulings on free trade within the community

      The import of electric vehicles has now f&^cked up their income stream as there are no Co2 emissions that they can tax 🙂

      Why not approach the ferry issue in a different way… surely it is unnacceptable that the ferry charges locals to travel to and throw between Madeira and Porto Santo?

      The Lobo Marino should in fact be free and the Grupo Sousa should subsidise it’s operation as a thank you to the Madeiran people

      It is discriminatory to charge residents and of course negatively effects the local economy and quality of life
