North African dust affects Madeira

Precautions advised

Dust warning from health authorities

The Regional Directorate of Health, IASAÚDE, has issued a statement on social media platforms today, confirming that Madeira is currently affected by a wind originating from North African carrying dust particles. This is not the expected gas and dust from the volcano in La Palma.

They advise a number of precautions, including recommending that all those with chronic respiratory diseases stay indoors, and keep the windows and doors closed whilst the dust affects the archipelago.

People should also avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, avoid physical exercise, wear a mask when working outdoors, stay hydrated, comply with prescribed medication including rapid relief measures, if necessary.
