Social Democrat coalition wins local elections

JM headlines Calado victory

Pedro Calado and ‘Funchal Sempre à Frente’ regained municipal power in a clear victory in Madeira. The governing coalition won the popular vote in most municipalities yesterday.

The future mayor of Funchalmade a victory speech at the campaign headquarters last night, after having followed the results at the party headquarters. The candidate of the PSD/CDS coalition, Pedro Calado, guaranteed that starting tomorrow, he will govern “for all Funchal residents”, those who voted for him and those who didn’t.

Calado guaranteed that he will treat the parish council that was not won by the PSD/CDS, Santa Maria Maior, in the same way as the other nine.

Calado will serve full four years

The former vice president of the Regional Government has assured the public several times that he will serve the entire term and hopes, in four years’ time, to be a candidate again and increase the vote.

Calado greeted his entire team, both parties, but also his opponent, Miguel Silva Gouveia, from the Confiança coalition, with whom he has already spoken.

The new president of the CMF promises a “presidency with great proximity” and left a challenge to the people of Funchal: “they can start pointing out on a little paper what we promise because we are going to deliver”.

Questioned whether this loose victory left him in a privileged position to be the future leader of the PSD, he replied that the government and the party are “very well handed” to Miguel Albuquerque.

“Right now, my focus is on the people of Funchal” and he guaranteed that he will never “turn his back” or “lie” to the residents, because he will serve his four-year term.

Powerful statements..? However Politicians need reminding they are not in power nor do they govern, they are elected to “serve” the Island of Madeira & its people, who also pay the taxes that pays Politicians salaries & expenses…
