Anniversary of Azores Autonomy

Portuguese head of state to attend

Anniversary of Azores Autonomy to be attended by Marcelo de Rebelo de Sousa

Açoriano Oriental reports that today, to mark the 45th anniversary of the solemn opening of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Marcelo de Rebelo de Sousa will preside over an evocative session at the headquarters of the Azorean Parliament, in Horta (Faial), according to information from the Presidency of the Republic.

The head of state will be the last to intervene, after the deputies of the eight parties with parliamentary seats, the president of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro , and the President of the Legislative Assembly, Luís Garcia.

Yesterday Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was present at the inauguration of the Álvaro Monjardino Library, in a tribute to the first president of the highest regional autonomy body.

The library is installed in the former building of the Horta Regional Conservatory, which will also house the Parliament Museum, a project stemming from a 2015 resolution approved in plenary, but whose opening date to the public has not yet been defined.

The commemorations of 45 years of Autonomy of the Azores also include a historic-cultural session, which will recreate the first session, in the building that housed the first seat of the Azorean parliament, but Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will no longer participate in the ceremony.

The then Regional Assembly of the Azores met for the first time on July 20, 1976, at the Amor da Pátria Society, in a preliminary session in which the powers of the elected deputies were verified, on June 27 of that year, and was scheduled the solemn opening date for September 4th.

The President of the Republic had already travelled, in July, to Madeira, where he also participated in the commemorations of the 45th anniversary of the constitution of the Regional Legislative Assembly.
