Funchal hosts Portugal Day
Took ages to track down an agenda for Portugal Day, with Funchal this year having been selected as the host city for the celebrations. Fortunately, the ever-reliable FN website had one! – which is translated and replicated below:
Flypasts and frigate canons will feature, and tactical military vehicles will be visible on the Funchal waterfront as series of ceremonies and military honors are planned for today in downtown Funchal, during the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
As early as 10:10 am, the forces will be ready and place on Funchal seafront. After the arrivals of guests at the tribunes and of high authorities with military honors, which include, in addition to the holders of the Region’s own government bodies, the Prime Minister, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, the Minister of National Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues, and the highest representatives of the three branches of the armed forces, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and several magistrates presiding over the courts, start the ceremony itself will take place, with an escort to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
At 11:00 sharp, the Forces will then salute the President of the Republic (the Military Band of Madeira will play the National Anthem, which will be sung by the military at the same time, and the frigate “Álvares Cabral” (pictured on a previous visit) will perform a regulations 21-gun salute.
Soon after, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will carry out a review of the parade forces, followed by a ceremony to honor the dead.
At 11:20 am, the president of the Organizing Committee for the Commemorations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, the Madeiran doctor from SESARAM, Carmo Caldeira, will take place.
At 11:30 am, the President of the Republic will speak; at 11:40 am the awards ceremony; at 11:50 am the parade of the Parada Forces and, at 12:15 pm, a presentation and overflight of F16 aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force (FAP).
The parade forces are made up of the following units, totaling 153 soldiers:
• Commander of Parada Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Pilot Aviator José Dias;
• The Military Band of Madeira;
• The Block of National Standards representing the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Navy, Army, Air Force and League of Combatants, with an Honor Escort consisting of a Platoon of Cadets from the Air Force Academy ;
• A joint company-level force, to 3 platoons from the Armed Forces Branches (each platoon consisting of 1 officer, 3 sergeants and 18 enlisted men): Navy Platoon consisting of soldiers from the 1st Marine Battalion; Army Platoon belonging to the Garrison Regiment No. 3 of the Madeira Military Zone; Air Force Military and Technical Training Center Platoon. The parade also includes a formation of former combatants.
In addition to the frigate “Álvares Cabral” which, during the ceremony, performs the volleys of fire, six tactical Army vehicles will be on display along Avenida do Mar: two PANDUR II 8×8, one VAMTAC ST5, one VAMTAC SOF and two Polaris MZR.
At 2000 feet above sea level, there will be a formation of F-16M Air Force aircraft, belonging to Squadrons 201 and 301, headquartered at Air Base No. 5, in Monte Real, which will fly over the site during the ceremony to honor the dead , inform us of the Presidency of the Republic.
Among the military leaders present are:
• Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Admiral Silva Ribeiro
• Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Mendes Calado
• Chief of Staff of the Army, General Nunes da Fonseca
• Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General Nunes Borrego
Speaking of magistrates present, register the following:
• President of the Constitutional Court Judge Counselor João Caupers
• President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Judge Counselor Henrique Araújo
• President of the Supreme Administrative Court, Judge Adviser Dulce Neto
• President of the Court of Auditors Judge Counselor José Tavares
Of course, the representative of the Republic for RAM, counselor judge Ireneu Cabral Barreto, will also be at the site.
Among other entities present, there are deputies to the AR and to the European Parliament for Funchal; Organizing Committee of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities; Cardinal José Tolentino Mendonça; the bishop of the Diocese of Funchal, Nuno Brás; the president of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, José Ornelas Carvalho; the Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Ivo Scapolo, representing the Diplomatic Corps; and other regional entities, as already mentioned, forming a total of 138 guests in the tribunes.
In the ceremony of homage to the dead, the ringing of “Silence” will be performed, followed by the ringing of “Dead in Combat” during which, in recollection, those present must remember those who “By valiant works freed themselves from the law of death”, following a minute of silence, refers to a note from the Presidency.
As already mentioned, a flight of F-16M Air Force fighters, belonging to Squadrons 201 and 301, headquartered at Air Base No. 5, in Monte Real, will fly over the site, in a gesture of homage. and led by Lieutenant-Colonel Pilot-Aviator Duarte Freitas.
Among the decorations that will be imposed, there is the Military Order of Christ, which is intended to distinguish outstanding services rendered to the country in the exercise of sovereign functions.
The President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces will impose the insignia of Honorary Member of the Military Order of Christ to the National Standards of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, of the General Staff of the Navy, of the General Staff of the Army and of the Air Force General Staff.
President and Prime Minister leave Portugal Day celebrations early
Both the President of the Republic and the prime minister must leave the region after the official ceremony, in the middle of the afternoon, heading for Lisbon. For this reason, Ireneu Barreto, representative of the Republic, will preside over the final ceremony of these commemorations, following, after 18:00, the lowering of the flag in Funchal.
Later JM reported that Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa will remain in Madeira until Sunday. According to JM, the prime minister will extend his stay at the Hotel Cliff Bay, in Funchal, for a few more days, where he will stay with his wife.
