Both local newspapers report this morning that the Regional Government and the President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, have come under scrutiny in a police investigation.

Six government departments, including the Presidency and the Vice-Presidency of the Regional Government, the Madeira Development Society, two companies, and two private houses were yesterday the target of searches by inspectors of the Judiciary Police and the Central Investigation Department.

The subject being investigated is the adjudication of the Madeira Free Trade Zone by direct agreement (awarded to SDM, a company in which hotel group Pestana is a shareholder) and the sale of Quinta do Arco de São Jorge. As Documents and computer equipment from SDM were collected.

Government departments are also being probed over links to the development company.
