According to the daily bulletin from IASAÚDE, the Regional Directorate of Health, yesterday saw 30 new cases of infection with COVID-19 recorded in Madeira. This is the lowest number of positive cases recorded the preceeding 24 hours for 82 days.

The number of new infections is the lowest since December 21 last year, when 26 cases were recorded.

Twenty-nine of the cases reported today are of local transmission, with another imported from France. There are also 40 recovered cases reported.

Update March 14:

Today Madeira has 43 more cases of infection with the new coronavirus COVID-19 according to the daily bulletin from the Regional Health Directorate. All 43 cases are locally transmitted. There are 47 more recovered people reported.

Update March 15:

Today Madeira counted 23 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection and another 58 cases recovered. This is the best record of new infections going back to December 18, when the Region registered 18 cases. Currently, there are 659 active cases in the Region, of which 17 are imported cases and 642 are locally transmitted.

Update March 16:

There are 40 new cases of COVID-19 and 48 recovered, the Regional Health Secretariat announced today in a bulletin that came out earlier today than usual. The new cases, according to the same source, are all locally transmitted. At the moment, there are 651 active cases in the Region, of which 17 are imported cases and 634 are of local transmission.

Regarding the isolation of active cases, the report notes that 30 people are hospitalized at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça (24 people in Multipurpose Units and 6 in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to COVID-19) and 10 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, the rest remaining in their own accommodation.

Update March 17:


Madeira today registered 45 new cases of infection with COVID-19, of which 43 were locally transmitted. There are 34 more recovered cases reported, with the Region now accounting for 7257 cases recovered.

There are 662 active cases, of which 19 are imported cases and 643 are locally transmitted. Regarding the isolation of active cases, it should be noted that 26 people are hospitalized at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital (22 people in Multipurpose Units and 4 in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to COVID-19) and 10 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, the rest remaining in their own accommodation.

Update March 18:

In the last 24 hours, 35 new cases of covid-19 infection were registered in the Region, according to the update made by health authority IASAÚDE. Thus, Madeira accounted for a total of 8021 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic. All of these new cases are locally transmitted, most of them already associated with positive case contacts.

In the last 24 hours, 41 people were recovered, bringing the total to 7,298 cases.

To date, the Region accounts for a total of 68 deaths associated with COVID-19. Today, an 88-year-old patient with the virus, and associated comorbidities, died at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

  1. The most promising part is that the imported cases is at or near zero which means the measures at the Airport to allow the safe re-opening of tourism is working well.
