Both local papers have reported in the last few minutes that the anticipated bad weather forecast for Monday has been ramped up to the Orange warning level due to the possible levels of rainfall.

The Portuguese Weather Institute, IPMA, has just now announced an orange warning for the Madeira archipelago on Monday, due to forecasts of rainy periods, accompanied by thunderstorms.

This warning is the second most serious on a scale of four for the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo and will be in effect between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on Monday when it will change to a yellow warning between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm. The BBC forecast has the poor weather continuing all week.

According to IPMA forecasts, on Monday, the north, south, mountainous regions and Porto Santo Island will experience “periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms”.

As for the wind, it will be strong from south/southeast, with gusts up to 90 km/h in mountainous regions.
