Weather latest: mainland Portugal freezing!

… and more bad weather for Madeira

Heavy seas during bad weather

Following on from a post earlier this week about the “bad weather forecast getting worse” in Madeira, the weather in mainland Portugal seems to be trapped in the same system, with the Portugal News reporting yesterday that overnight lows will hover around 0 degrees in Porto, 1 in Lisbon and 6 in Faro.

The freezing cold weather currently sweeping Portugal looks here to stay for a little while longer. All mainland districts remain under a yellow weather warning due to the cold, which in some places is forecast to drop to minus four degrees. Overnight lows will hover around 0° in Porto, 1° in Lisbon, and 6° in Faro. There is actually a yellow warning for cold on the mainland

Madeira expecting more rain and wind

The forecast for Madeira today, as expected, is summarized as “more rain”, a situation that is expected to remain for a few days more. There will be heavy rain again this morning, with the possibility of thunderstorms. Cloudy skies are once again forecast today, possibly clearing later. The Captaincy of the Port of Funchal has the usual weather warning in place for heavy seas.

Going forward the Diario reports that the archipelago of Madeira is again being ‘buffeted’ by weather warnings. Orange, for waves, and yellow for wind and precipitation, but in this case to double, since it is expected to be in force today and then again from Thursday.

Warning of risk situation for certain activities due to the precipitation that will take effect between 18:00 on Thursday and 06:00 on Friday, this time with the possibility os more thunderstorms.

10 metre waves possible

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the other warnings come into effect. The first is ‘yellow’ for maritime unrest on the north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo, starting at noon, which at midnight and until 9:00 am on Friday, changes to ‘orange’ due to the forecast of waves from the northeast with 5 to 6 metres, reaching a maximum height of 10 metres. Then, until 6 pm on Friday, it returns to yellow warning (waves with 4 to 5 metres).

In the middle of this storm, between 6 pm on Thursday and noon on Friday, the yellow warning for strong wind comes in, forecasting gusts up to 110 km/h in the regions mountains, and up to 75 km / h in the remaining sectors of Madeira and Porto Santo.

In total, the Portuguese Weather Institute, IPMA, has five yellow and one orange warning, three of which (yellow for precipitation and wind) for the entire archipelago.

Filomena depression

On the mainland, Diário de Notícias  reports that IPMA has said that the effects of the Filomena depression, which is centered south of the Azores archipelago and associated with a frontal system of moderate to strong activity, will affect the weather in the archipelago of Madeira and in the south of the continent

“In the archipelago of Madeira the effects of depression will be felt by the increase in the intensity of the wind from today afternoon, extending until the end of the morning on Friday, with gusts up to 75 kilometers per hour, being up to 110 kilometers per hour in the highlands and at the eastern and western ends of the island of Madeira”.

“Associated with this depression, there is an increase in sea agitation on the north coast and in Porto Santo, with northwest waves and a significant height of 4 to 5 meters, changing to northeast waves of 5 to 6 meters on Friday”
