COVID-19: President of the Republic tests positive

… but Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is asymptomatic

Various national and international media outlets report that President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday.

Official sources confirm that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is asymptomatic and is displaying no symptoms. He has cancelled his agenda for the next few days.

A note on the official website of the Presidency says that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa tested negative on Sunday, but “it was now learned, at 21:40 pm (yesterday), that the PCR test was positive”.

The President of the Republic is working in his official residence, Belém Palace, where he will “remain in prophylactic isolation in the residential area, awaiting the epidemiological inquiry”.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, the Prime Minister, António Costa and the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, have already been informed.
