COVID-19: huge leap in positive case numbers

140 new cases, with 134 local transmission

Yesterday saw a record number of 140 new positive cases of COVID-19 reported in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. These were 6 imported cases (4 from the Lisbon/Tagus Valley Region, 1 from the United Kingdom and 1 from Brazil) and 134 cases of local transmission, most of which as usual are described as “already associated with positive case contacts or contexts”. Details as usual here.

Strangely, a better record was recorded on the same day, with five counties in the Region not registering any new cases of COVID-19. The municipalities of Porto Moniz, Ponta do Sol, Porto Santo, Santana and São Vicente maintained the same numbers as the previous day, being, 12, 33, 57, 29 and 12, respectively.

The data released by the Institute of Health Administration, IASAÚDE, showed that in the previous 24 hours the municipality of Funchal registered an increase of 48 new positive cases of COVID-19, the highest in the entire Region.

With 13 new cases, Machico reached a running total of 197 cases, whilst he municipality of Câmara de Lobos today added 45 new cases of COVID-19, to move to a total of 558 infections. Santa Cruz, the municipality covering the airport, saw 27 newcases, moving to a total of 416.

Two creches were closed in Machico and just along the coast 24 positive cases of were detected among users of the Atalaia Continuing Care Unit in Caniço.

JM reports that the iconic Belmond Reid’s Palace Hotel has decided to close its doors from February 1.
