5-metre waves warning

More rain forecast

5-metre waves warning 1

The Captaincy of the Port of Funchal today issued one of their usual warnings of strong maritime unrest that will remain in effect until 6:00 pm today Tuesday, December 29. Vessels are advised to stay in port.

The waves will be temporarily between four and five metres during Tuesday morning on the north coast.

More rain forecast

The Portuguese Weather Institute, IPMA, are predicting more rain for today, starting this morning in northern slopes and mountainous areas. Hopefully not as bad as Christmas Day!

  1. With fresh Northerly winds blowing over nearly 2000 miles of the Atlantic from Iceland it’s not surprising that they will whip up 5 metre waves by the time they hit the first rock they come across, that rock being the North coast of Madeira !

I wish, in my latter seafaring days, we had had a Captaincy of the Port that would have advised us to stay in port every time there were rough seas forecast – there certainly would have been some ” strong maritime unrest ” more in the form of the verbal kind from our owners and charterers !! – but then again Aberdeen, Peterhead and Lerwick aren’t exactly renowned for their marinas and pleasure craft traffic !!

In these trying times spare a thought for all those seafarers out there, all ‘essential workers’ keeping supply lines open, yet when they have completed their tours of duty face all the frustrations of international flying and border controls in trying to return home to their loved ones.
