Tourism declines in Madeira in August

… but some improvement over July

The Diario reports that estimates for August 2020 reveal that 49.4% of tourist accommodation establishments in the Region recorded a movement of guests (66.6% of the capacity of the total tourist accommodation) during that month. The large percentage was registered in rural tourism (68.3%), followed by hospitality (66.9%) and local accommodation (47.4%).

The figures have been released by Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) and point to a total of 266.800 overnight stays in the tourist accommodation during the month of August, a decrease of 70.9% compared to the same month last year.

If we exclude local accommodation with less than 10 beds, overnight stays at the tourist accommodation have a a 72.2% decrease compared to August 2019.

Between January and August 2020, the overnight stays in total tourist accommodation in the Region recorded a decrease of 66.9% compared to the same period last year, approaching 1.9 million. At the country, overnight stays fell less, in the order of 47.1% while total and room income observed, in the same order, variations negative figures of 48.9% and 49.2%.

The hotel industry concentrated 73.1% of overnight stays, decreasing 73.9% year-on-year, while local accommodation registered a drop of 58.7%, bringing together 23.3% of total overnight stays. For your Once again, tourism in rural areas and housing included only 3.6% of overnight stays, showing a decrease of 52.3%.

The main issuing markets, the estimated changes in overnight stays in August this year show a less severe decline in performance than in July, with the market British market presenting the sharpest fall, of 83.9%, followed by the markets French (-82.8%) and German (-71.3%).

The national market registered a significantly less pronounced fall in overnight stays, in the order of 19.1%. In accumulated terms (from January to August 2020), the French market, as in the previous month, continues to record the biggest drop with -82.0% of overnight stays, followed by the German and British markets, with decreases of 66.3% and 65.5%, respectively. The Portuguese market showed, for the same period, the least sharp drop, 48.2%, compared to the same period last year.

From January to August, overnight stays in tourist accommodation decreased by 66.9%, while total and room income fell by 69.3% and 69.5%, respectively.

The average stay value increased compared to the previous month (3.99 nights), arriving at 4.29 nights.

A bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the month in reference was fixed at 28.2%, 42.1 percentage points below that observed in the same month last year. For your Once, the occupancy rate reached 29.1%.

August 2020 continues to record significantly low values ​​in the RevPAR, which did not exceed 21.43 euros in accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), -63.7% compared to same month of the previous year. The hotel sector showed a decrease of 64.1%, with a RevPAR of 23.10 euros.

By turn, the profit per used room (ADR) increased from € 79.24 in August 2019 to € 73.69 in August 2020 (-7.0%).

  1. Looking at the figures I think Madeira is doing better than they might have expected. I hate to think what the figures are for the Algarve!

    The problem will come when the countries of origin start to reintroduce lockdown and the flights stop again.
