Porto Santo moving further towards sustainability

6 tons of green waste and “monsters” collected

Porto Santo

Aguas e Residuos da Madeira (ARM), with the collaboration of the Porto Santo City Council and the office of the vice-presidency of the Regional Government, carried out this yesterday an intensive cleaning action at the most critical points of abandonment of “monsters ”(appliances, mattresses, furniture) and green waste, from Porto Santo. In total, six tons were collected.

Participating in this action, the Regional Secretary for the Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change was keen to remember that the Regional Government wants Porto Santo to be a “green island”, not least because, in a short time, it will be an ‘Reserva da Biosphere’.

Asking for the collaboration of the entire population, in order to place the waste in the correct places, Susana Prada recalled that the collection of ‘monsters’ and green waste is free and is just a phone call away.

“We ask for the collaboration of all, in the sense of not leaving the public road dirty, because we want a sustainable Porto Santo and a Biosphere Reserve as it should be”, concluded the minister.

ARM has resorted to an awareness campaign

In Madeira ARM has been verifying more and more cases of abandonment of bulky waste“monsters” on the public roads, particularly next to public waste disposal containers.

In order to combat this situation, ARM in partnership with the adhering municipalities (Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Porto Santo, Ribeira Brava and Santana) has been implementing several measures, among them, awareness raising actions; punctual cleaning actions in more critical places; the reinforcement of the collection means and circuits and the free customer collection service in the participating municipalities.

In addition to these actions, an awareness campaign, under the name “Pega O Monstro”, with 4 Liters, is underway, with the objective of making the population aware of the non-abandonment of green waste and monsters, promoting the free collection service of this waste.
