Two local footballers test positive upon return to Madeira

JM report from an informed source that two of the growing number of arrivals who were announced to have tested positive at the airport last week – reported in an update here -are professional footballers with one of the two top football teams in Madeira, CD Nacional. Club sources have not commented.

The first team footballers concerned will have been away from the Region together with the rest of their teammates for the fixture against Sporting de Braga, north of Porto on the mainland, and they will have made the flight back after having contracted the virus.

Despite the “no comment” from the club, the Institute of Health Administration IASAÚDE has confirmed that two imported cases “confirmed at the end of this week” and “all other practitioners involved and the respective technical team, a total of 54 contacts, underwent tests” – all believed to be negative.

Currently, the two infected athletes are fulfilling the isolation period, having complied with all the guidelines issued by the regional and national health authorities.
