Flooding at Praia Formosa – videos

Heavy rain eventually arrived yesterday as forecast causing localised flooding in places including Praia Formosa. A bar was also structurally damaged by the heavy rain in Madalena do Mar.

Ironically the front page of the Diario leads with a report that falling annual rainfall on the island, with water distribution company ARM having to divert water from agricultural irrigation in order to keep supplies running to domestic dwellings.

The other headline is that AL accommodation is currently down 63% on last year, with the end of the holiday season and the return to school only making the outlook worse for the remainder of the year.

The overflowing ribeira heading down to Praia Formosa was also caught on YouTube

A landslip on an embankment on the VR1 Rapida caused problem in the vicinity of São Martinho, stopping the traffic travelling from Funchal towards Câmara de Lobos and reducing the traffic in the other direction to just one lane.

  1. When it rains in Madeira a lot of water can fall in a very short time – nothing compared to the floods ten years ago, but it gives you an idea how such a situation can develop.

    Given that the water requirements of hotels must be way down, this is potentially very serious.
