Presidential visit today

Marcelo’s visit to Madeira “should have happened before”, says Albuquerque

President of the Regional Government of Madeira with the President of the Government of the Republic

The Diario reports that President of the Regional Government of Madeira reacted yesterday to the announcement of the visit, today, of the President of the Government of the Republic, saying that “the State has been unaware of the situation and needs of the population of Madeira and Porto Santo in recent months”.

The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, said yesterday that the visit of the President of the Republic this weekend to the region will “go well”, but “it should have happened before”.

This is because, according to Albuquerque, “the State has been unaware of the situation and needs of the population of Madeira and Porto Santo in recent months”.

Guarantee for Regional loan?

The President of the Government of Madeira referred to the media that one of the topics he will address with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is the State’s guarantee for a loan of more than €300 million that the region will take out, to face the pandemic crisis of the COVID-19 and that “it will not involve a penny to national taxpayers”.

“We are going to transmit and appeal to the influence of the President of the Republic for the need for the financing operation that Madeira is going to carry out, at its expense and through its resources, to also have the State guarantee, which will allow Madeiran taxpayers and the region to pay less interest”, he said.

Visit lasts less than 24 hours

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, arrives today, Saturday, at 20:30 in Madeira for a visit of less than 24 hours, which includes a trip to the parish of Câmara de Lobos, scheduled for Sunday, at 12:30.

An official source told the Lusa news agency that the visit of the head of state to the island begins at 11:00 am on Sunday with a visit to the Bom Jesus Health Centre, proceeding, at 11:30 am, to the Central Hospital of Funchal, to see the Multipurpose Inpatient Unit / Intensive Care Unit dedicated to COVID-19.

The President of the Republic will be received at 12:30 at the Câmara de Lobos Town Hall and then have lunch at a restaurant in that city.

At 15:00, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa returns to Funchal for a meeting with the heads of private institutions of social solidarity in the autonomous region, at Quinta Magnólia.

The President of the Republic then proceeds to Madeira International Airport, where he visits, at 17:30, the Screening and Surveillance Unit at COVID-19, which went into operation on July 1, with the reopening of the archipelago to tourism.

On May 21, the president of the Regional Government criticized the head of state, accusing him of not commenting on the situation arising from the COVID-19 in the archipelago, neither in terms of the region’s claims, nor on the behavior of the population.

“The President of the Republic, who was elected by direct suffrage, has not yet had time to comment on what is happening in Madeira, he has not yet had time to address a word of comfort to Madeirans and admiration for the way they faced this epidemic”, said Miguel Albuquerque.
