“Urgência” visits drop dramatically

The sign outside the main hospital in FunchalAccident and Emergency visits in Funchal dropped when the contingency plan for COVID-19 began in the second half of March, as reported today by the hospital administration authority SESARAM.

In this fortnight, 1,889 calls were made, which reveals a drop of 62.30% when compared to the same period in 2019 (5,007).

According to the same data, in March, the Hospital Emergency Service registered 5,352 visits. In comparison with the same month of the previous year, there was a fall of 40.9%.

In addition, in March, 70 minor surgeries were performed in this period, 312 in the outpatient clinic and 397 in the operating room. In the COVID-19 phase, a total of just 208 surgeries were performed at the hospital in the second half of March
