Busy month for religious festivals
FN has kindly detailed the various religious festivals taking place over the remainder of this month.
The feast of Santo Amaro in the parish of Santa Cruz is one of the best known in Madeira.
It marks the end of Christmas time and is marked on January 15 with Mass at 2 pm followed by a procession with the image of that saint to his chapel.
On the 14th at 8:00 pm, the procession will start with the departure of the chapel of Santo Amaro to the parish church where the Eucharist will be celebrated.
Paul do Mar
On the 15th of January in the church of Paul do Mar will celebrate the feast in honour of Santo Amaro the patron saint of that Madeiran parish.
The Mass will begin at 4:30 pm and then the procession will take place.
The parish of Santo Amaro, located in the parish of Santo António, will celebrate the festivities in honour of Santo Amaro and Santo Antão. It will be on Sunday January 19th.
The Eucharist will begin at 4:00 pm followed by the procession.
On Saturday, 18 January at 7:30 pm the Mass will be celebrated.
Ponta do Sol
The parish of Ponta do Sol will celebrate the feast of Santo Amaro in the chapel with that invocation there.
It will be on Sunday, January 19th and the Eucharist will be celebrated at 3 pm after which the procession will take place.
On Wednesday 15 January, the liturgical day of Santo Amaro will be celebrated the “Mass of the Party” at 7 pm.
On Saturday 18 of this month at 19:45 will begin the novena and the evening mass.
The Madeiran village will animate that area.
The feast of Santo Antão, Seixal’s patron saint, will be celebrated on Sunday, January 19 with Mass at 3:30 pm following the procession.
The Eucharist on the eve of this feast will begin at 8 pm on Saturday, 18 January.
There will be a traditional camp.
Caniço will be partying on Sunday, January 19 with the celebration of Santo Antão, who is one of the two patrons of that parish (the other patron saint is the Holy Spirit).
On Saturday 18th January there will be the blessing of the animals in the churchyard due to Santo Antão being the protector of the animals.
Santo Antão will be marked in the parish of Prazeres on Sunday, January 19.
It begins at 10 am with the Eucharist in honour of St. Anthony in the parish church of Prazeres. Then comes two hours later lunch with wheat and meat soup, wine and garlic in the church bazaar in the churchyard. At 2:30 pm the animals will be concentrated in the churchyard and at 3 pm there will be the blessing of the animals followed by a procession.
This activity has been taking place since the opening of that Thursday, 1 October 2000.
The devotion that exists in the local community to Santo Antão, protector of domestic animals, aims to ask God, through Santo Antão, the protection of creation (animals) and fields (agriculture). It involves, besides domestic animals, pets and companionship. Devotion to St. Anthony (252 AD – 356 AD) is strongest in agricultural areas.
With Eucharist at 10:30 followed by a procession, the parish of Gaula will celebrate St. Anthony on Sunday, January 19th.
In the churchyard, there will be the blessing of the animals for 12 hours.
Achada de Gaula
On Sunday, January 26, the Mass celebrated at 9:30 am in the church of Achada de Gaula will be in honour of Santo Antão.
Then the procession and the blessing of the animals will take place.
Arco de São Jorge
São Sebastião will have a party at the Arco de São Jorge church.
It will be on Sunday, January 19, beginning the Mass at 4 pm.
From 5 pm the procession will take place.
Then at 5:30 pm, there will be animation and shared conviviality.
Santana e Ilha
The parishes of Santana and Ilha have as parish priest Father José Afonso Rodrigues and will celebrate the feast of Santo Antão on Sunday, January 19th.
In the church of the island the Mass will begin at 9 am and in Santana at 11 am
At the end of the celebrations, the procession will take place.
Ponta do Pargo, Amparo and Fajã da Ovelha
The three parishes of the Archpriest of Calheta, whose parish priest is Fr Roberto Aguiar, will celebrate the feast of Santo Antão on Sunday, 19 January.
At Ponta do Pargo church the Mass will be at 8 o’clock, at Amparo the Mass starts at 9:30 am and at Fajã da Ovelha the Eucharist will start at 11 o’clock.
At the end of the celebrations, the procession will take place.
Calheta, Atouguia and São Francisco Xavier
These three parishes of the Archprestate of Calheta have as parish priest Fr Silvano Gonçalves. On Sunday, January 19th, they will celebrate Santo Antão.
Masses will be celebrated at 8 am in the Atouguia church; at 9:30 am in the church of São Francisco Xaveir at 11 am in Calheta
São Vicente is the patron saint of a Madeiran parish.
The feast will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 22, the saint’s liturgical day.
The Eucharist will begin at 3 pm. There will be novenas in the parish church on January 14, 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, 6 pm to 5 pm and Sunday 7 pm to 10 am.
The Mass on the eve of the party will begin at 20:30 on the 21st of this month.
On Sunday, January 26 will be celebrated the feast of St. Anthony in the church of Camacha.
It will start at 11 o’clock.
Then there will be the procession to the parish church with the blessing of the animals in the churchyard and the image in the old church of Camacha.
Arco da Calheta
The holy protector of the animals will have a party in the church of Arco da Calheta at 8 am on Sunday 26 this month.
In this way, the local population asks Santo Antão to protect their animals.
Curral das Freiras
In the church of Curral das Freiras on Sunday 26 January at 11:30 will be celebrated the Eucharist in honour of St. Anthony.
At the end the procession and the blessing of the animals will take place, as St. Anthony is the protector of the animals.
Câmara de Lobos
The parish of Câmara de Lobos will celebrate the feast of São Sebastião, the patron saint of that Madeiran community. It will be on Sunday, January 26 and the Eucharist will start at 4 pm. At the end of the liturgical ceremony, a procession will take place that will cover some streets of that city.
The party is organized by the Confraria de São Sebastião in collaboration with the parish community.
São Sebastião is the patron saint of Caniçal.
The party will take place on Sunday, January 26, beginning the Eucharist at 1 pm, followed by the procession.
On Saturday at 8 pm the Mass will be celebrated.
The celebration of this saint is celebrated on January 20, marking the day of his martyrdom: January 20 gives the year 288, or 300.
In Caniçal the party is held on the last Sunday of January.
On Sunday, January 26, in the Church of the Incarnation, located in the parish of the Straits of Câmara de Lobos, the Eucharist will be celebrated, followed by the procession and blessing of the animals. It will be in praise of St. Anthony.
In the churchyard, there will be a bazaar where will be auctioned products whose offerings revert to the works of that parish.
